How Often Should Triathletes Race? | Active.com

Well if you look at my schedule you can see that I think the answer is at least once a month. My triathlons are my "A" races but I like to stay competitive with my runs. The Eagleman and Nation's events are top priority and the events before them are training events. The Wildwood triathlon was added to let me know where I am when I do the Nation's in September. The Seagull Century ride is a type of event and I am not sure if I'll do it for time or fun. Maybe all of my friends can tell me what they think I should do and perhaps I'll do a poll for this.

Should You Go Gluten-Free? | Active.com

Should You Go Gluten-Free? Active.com

Many athletes take their diets very seriously and I know that mine is one of the most important part of my plan. With having an obesity problem and never wanting to weigh 300+ pounds again I look at all the information available. While there is no magic bullet or pill to cure obesity you can win the war. With the advice of a good doctor and nutritionist the battles along the way can become smaller. A good diet is just as important as a good bike. The tools we use to train for triathlons, marathons, and other endurance events should include whatever it takes to keep the diet under control.

March Update

Well there are 90 days until the 2011 Subaru Ironman 70.3 EagleMan and the training is doing well. The year is getting off to a good start and I am setting some new personal records for my runs. The really cool part is that my wife and daughter are competing with me and we are all having fun.  My next run is the Cherry Pit 10 Mile at the South River High School. This is the 2nd leg of the Championship Series sponsored by the Annapolis Striders; I am looking for a time under an hour and forty five minutes. That might not seem fast to many of you but for me after suffering from heart issues and obesity this is lighting.

The training program that Team In Training provided has been a great boast to my own plan. There is something that you can do to make this an extraordinary milestone. Join my team by doing one or even all of the following things: provide assistance along my training route, ride or run with me, count my laps in the pool or join me for an open water swim. The most important thing you can do is to go to click on this link Tri For A Cure and donate to help find a cure for Leukemia & Lymphoma. My goal this year is raise over $5000.00 to support the facts listed below, I will add to the list for everyone that donates $2,500.00 your name will be tattooed on me and you will train with me forever.

LLS Mission Fact

A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.
A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.

A donation of $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.

February update

The time is flying by so quickly that it is hard to believe that it is February 11, 2011. Tomorrow is the first race of 2011 and even though it is a 5K run to me it symbolizes the start of the year. There definitely seems to be something special about this time of the year. The Super Bowl is done, pitchers and catchers are reporting for spring training, and NASCAR is getting ready for the Daytona 500. With all of this going on here I am ready to run the first 5K of the year.

There are 120 days until the Eagleman Half Ironman and I am working hard to be competitive in that event. With the Maryland Team In Training Team along side of me this will be a great event. One of our Honored Teammates is Eva Paxton, she is training for this event and undergoing chemotherapy. When you have teammates like Eva you push a little harder to be your best. Before I reach the starting line in Cambridge, MD I will run several other events that you can find on my schedule page.

There have been some setbacks in my training schedule with having a cold to start January and February off with. Now that those are behind me the training will be going full steam ahead. My swim coach is teaching the breath stroke and I am getting more comfortable in the water. The bike is on the trainer for the winter and while I am not use to riding in doors it seems to be going well. Most of my run training is on the treadmill which I know everyone disagrees with but when you have a cold running in freezing temperatures is not fun. There will be a long run this week outdoors to prepare for the B&A Trail Marathon on March 6, 2011.

As promised I will talk a bit about nutrition and my personal fight with obesity. That is right I said obesity, something that is genetic and I could not be lucky and have it pass me by. Since having gastric bypass surgery in July 2008 and losing over 100 pounds I struggle to keep it off. This was a life changing event for me and I have been on a restricted diet since then. This off season I added weight training to my schedule and while I am stronger now it also put some more weight back on me. There are ongoing conversations with my doctors but I am looking for a nutritionist certified in sports and working with endurance athletes. To say that I am concerned about gaining weight again that would not be an understatement. My promise to you is that I will always keep an eye on this and your recommendations and ideas will be considered.

January update

Well this month is flying by and I sure wish I could get it back. Oh well that won't happen so I will move forward. My search for a swim coach has ended and already helping. Coach Corey helping me understand that with proper body position and a better kick my swim will be enhanced. Now that I know that I am practicing drills to make these things natural. Someone once told me that knowledge is power. Well I have the knowledge and the power to make a change. The training calendar is being updated to add more swim time to practice the drills to help make these changes. Next week I learn to do the breath stroke, I guess you can teach an old dog a new trick.

The running is on target and I will be ready for the B & A Trail Marathon March 6, 2011. This is not the only race on my schedule however it is the first endurance event of the year. There are six events on my schedule leading up to the Eagleman Half Ironman that I am planning to run with the Maryland Team In Training team. The mission of Team In Training is to raise funds to find cure for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. My goal for this event is $2,900.00 and I am sure that all my friends will help me achieve this goal while I train for success. With your support and my coaches I will be ready to complete the Half Ironman event.

My next post will focus on nutrition and what I am doing to continue my personal fight with obesity.
